The 2020 Lexus ES luxury sedan is a mid-size luxury sedan. It delivers many of what those who shop in this segment value most. The ES offers a refined driving experience and an optional hybrid powertrain to maximize fuel efficiency. The cabin of this sedan is a quiet reading area on the highway and features a stylish, elegant design. The ES is equipped with a variety of driver-assist features and tech, while its large trunk makes it very practical. The only problem is the infotainment system. It has a trackpad which can be distracting and difficult to use while driving. The base price of this Lexus is lower than most competitors, but it still offers great value for money in a class that is competitive.
What’s new for 2020?
The 2020 model year will see the ES include Android Auto smartphone integration. However, this feature is only available on cars produced after October 2019. An optional rear spoiler is now available for gas-only models.
Pricing and Which One To Buy
The base ES350 trim is expected to be a satisfactory choice for buyers who are interested in the Lexus sedan. The ES350 is connected to the pavement by 17-inch wheels. Other standard features include LED brake lights, automatic headlights, LED brake lights, a sunroof and power-adjustable sideviews that have integrated turn signals and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The ES350’s front seats can be adjusted by power and the tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel can be manually adjusted to the ideal position. You will also find standard interior amenities such as dual-zone automatic climate control and keyless entry and push button start, faux leather upholstery and a leather-wrapped wheel. All ES sedans include the Lexus Safety System+ suite, which provides driver-assistance features such as adaptive cruise control and forward-collision warning. A few extra options are recommended: The Premium package, which costs $1375, includes rain-sensing windshield washers, a power tilt/telescoping wheel, driver-seat memories, heated/ventilated front seat, and a power tilt/telescoping steering column. Wood trim ($360) would be an option, as well as blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert ($500). Our ES costs $43,160 with these options.
Transmission, Engine, and Performance
Two powertrain options are available for the 2020 Lexus ES. All ES350 models come standard with a 3.5-liter V-6, which produces 302 horsepower and 267 lb ft of torque. The eight-speed automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels. All ES350h trims feature a hybrid powertrain with a net output 215 horsepower and 153 lb ft of torque. Standard equipment includes a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), and front-wheel drive. The gas-only ES ran at 60 mph in 6.1 seconds on our test track. The hybrid version made the sprint in 8.3 seconds. The Lexus sedan’s two flavors have the same calming handling and comfortable ride that luxury car buyers love. The F Sport trim offers more performance-oriented suspension tuning and larger wheels for those who want to feel more agile. Even with this upgrade, however, the ES still feels less agile than comparable models like the BMW 5-series.
Fuel Economy and Real World MPG
The 2020 Lexus ES350’s mileage is 22/32 mpg in the city/highway, according to the EPA. The ES350h hybrid gets 43/44 mpg, which is exactly what you would expect. During 200-miles of highway driving at 75 mph, the ES350h hybrid averaged 39 mpg. On the same route, the ES350h produced fuel economy of 45 mpg.
Interior, Comfort, & Cargo
The ES’s cabin is a comfortable haven for passengers thanks to its elegant, asymmetrical dash design and high-quality materials. The seats offer comfortable support and ample legroom for long-legged passengers. The cabin is quiet even at highway speeds. The trunk can hold 17.0 cubic feet, which is more than the Volvo S90 (14.0 cubes) or Acura TLX (14.0 cubes). The ES does not have a folding rear seat. This Lexus is unable to carry large cargo.
Connectivity and Infotainment
The 2020 Lexus ES is a luxury-car buyer’s choice for cars with the most advanced tech features. The standard model comes with an infotainment system that is controlled by an 8.0-inch central screen. Both Apple CarPlay capability and Android Auto capability allow for seamless device integration. All models include a 10-speaker sound system with SiriusXM satellite broadcast. A list of standard tech features includes Amazon Alexa compatibility and Bluetooth phone and music streaming. Scout GPS Link navigation is also included.
