To stand out from its entry-luxury competitors, the Lexus IS relies heavily on sporty pretenses and stylized visuals. Although the Lexus sedan may not live up to the bold sheetmetal promises, the well-tuned ride and handling characteristics make it a pleasant vehicle. The interior design of the IS is just as distinctive as its exterior. It features a driver-focused layout and excellent materials. The infotainment system is clunky and the back seat isn’t very large. The 2020 IS is an attractive alternative to its more well-known peers, thanks to a range of standard driver assistance features and the rewarding F Sport performance version.

What’s new for 2020?

After minor engine upgrades last year and adding more options, Lexus has made few changes to the 2020 IS300 or 2020 IS350. The IS lineup now includes the Blackline edition, which features dark exterior elements and blue interior bits. Dark blue accents are added to the dashboard, steering wheel, and door panels. The seats also get gray trim and blue stitching. After February 2020, the Liquid Platinum- and Redline-colored paints will be discontinued.

Pricing and Which One To Buy

The IS350 F Sport, despite being the most expensive model in the range, is our recommendation. The IS350 F Sport’s 311-hp V-6 engine is a significant upgrade over the IS300’s less powerful four-cylinder. It also features the F Sport package, which enhances its sporty appearance. For an additional $1335, those who desire all-wheel drive can get it. We would skip the two packages, but we would choose a few of the options. These include the useful and more attractive LED headlights, self-parking, and heated steering wheels.

Engine, Transmission, & Performance

The IS predetermines powertrain pairings. The IS can be configured to pair a turbocharged four-cylinder or V-6 with two different versions. It also has a six-speed or an eight-speed automatic transmission. Even the most powerful V-6 feels slow compared to less powerful competitors. Some of these, unlike the Lexus offer a manual transmission. The IS350 F Sport rear-drive is slower than its four-cylinder counterpart, but it feels much more energetic. It also has a faster acceleration time than the smaller engine by about half a second. This makes it a preferred choice. Driver engagement is enhanced by the paddle-shift eight-speed automatic. The F Sport package, despite all appearances, improves handling and doesn’t make for a more harsh ride. All trims can have the F Sport option, which features a tuned suspension and 18-inch wheels. The other star of this show is the precise steering, which works well with the chassis. Even the four-cylinder’s underpowered engine is fun to drive thanks to their quick reflexes. We found the four-cylinder model had a comfortable feel to the brake pedal. The brakes also responded well to our longer driving distances.

Fuel Economy and Real World MPG

Based on EPA ratings, and our own experience, it seems that the IS is more concerned with looks than fuel efficiency. Its EPA estimates are lower that those of its rivals and it failed to distinguish itself in our real-world highway fuel economy test. The IS350 that we last tested topped its EPA highway rating of 2 mpg while the four-cylinder version fell short by 1.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo

The interior feels a little like a fighter-jet cockpit with its well-padded seats and extensive switchgear. Lexus refinement is evident in the soft-touch surfaces and aluminum accents. Although the materials used are of high quality, and there is an interactive instrument panel that can be added, the dashboard design looks outdated. Competitors have better rear-seat legroom. The IS’s inability to carry luggage around is hindered by its small trunk and the fact that it doesn’t fold flat at the rear. The IS was able to carry five more items than its top rivals despite having a smaller trunk volume. Although the rear seats can be folded down via the trunk handles, it still holds four more carry-ons that the BMW 330i or the Audi A4. The front row is not well equipped to store small items.

Connectivity and Infotainment

Standard infotainment systems come with a 7.0 inch display and a 10-speaker sound system. The base unit can also be operated using a rotary dial instead of the finicky touchpad controller found on more expensive packages. These packages include a 10.3-inch central screen, integrated navigation, and an 835-watt Mark Levinson surround sound system with 15 speakers. The larger screen is crisp and modern, with modern icons. Its response times were good in our testing. However, neither Apple CarPlay or Android Auto capability was available. The touchpad that comes with the larger center screen is not intuitive.
